Do you believe there is too much change right now?

Beware: This is just the beginning.

A recent study of the World Economic Forum (WEF), “The Future of Jobs”, conducted among Executives of over 300 companies worldwide in 20 countries predicts that by 2025 no more than 48% of working hours will be done by people – today this rate is at 71%.

According to the report, over 50% of tasks will be executed by machines and algorithms across all industries and jobs, be it in production, offices, distribution, or hospitals. We are heading rapidly towards a radical change of our work environment, which is considered by some experts as the 4th industrial revolution.

Developments in genetics, artificial intelligence, robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing and biotechnology, to name just a few, are all building on and amplifying one another.

This sounds like really bad news at first glance but let’s look at it in a more differentiated manner. Even though the report predicts that the work of around 75 million employees will be done by machines already by 2022, they also expect that within the next 5 years around 133 million new workplaces will be created – and this will require a whole new set of skills and a different way of working.

Worldwide, 42% of skills employees need will change over the next 5 years.

This is truly disruptive, high-speed change and what makes it even more complex – employees need to behave differently, rapidly. If you already tried to change the behavior of people you have certainly realized that this is a very hard thing to do.

To be ready to manage this significant transition, leaders across all industries must be prepared to manage change more than ever before. Proper, successful, and sustainable change management becomes one of the central skills you need to develop if you want to stay ahead of the game as a leader. You will have to pro-actively work on establishing a change and learning culture among your employees. This will require time and effort.
